From her website:
Michelle Bellon's, The Complexity of a Soldier, makes a bold and controversial statement which garnishes attention and debate- "Child Molestors are domestic terrorists which have yet to be adequately dealt with."
Says Bellon, "It
is my wish that this one simple story may give a voice to those who
have yet to be heard. Until we as a whole population change our
perspectives on what we will and will not allow in our society and how
to handle all forms of terrorism, including child molestors, the victims
will still be left without a voice, without justice. Let us make
change."
Bellon's latest release is Embracing You, Embracing Me. A coming of age story, told by Roshell, a teenager girl growing up in the nineties with her ailing mother and strict, but loving grandmother. As she awakens to discover a new, undeniable attraction to boys, she struggles with an innate belief that she wouldn't be able to fall in love, thinking that all men lie, cheat and then leave, the way her biological father did.
When she meets Gabriel, she is smitten with newfound puppy love, but as prom nights threatens to turn into an epic disaster, she gives up on any hope of getting his attention.
But then life takes a dramatic turn for Roshell and her life changes forever.
A love story emerges from the anguish of Roshell's life, and when she leaves school and finds work at a casino, things don't get any less complicated for her - until one night a powerful dream marks out the exact path that she must take.
Reviewers are saying:
"WOW. A profoundly emotional book. Not at first though. At first, it fooled me into thinking it would be some light coming of age romance. But then I kept on reading ... and then it hit me, like high speed train. This book, it's left me breathless. First time in a long time I've read a book that's evoked such a strong emotional reaction in me..."
"Michelle Bellon sweeps you into the story right from the start, bringing the angst and excitement of a coming-of-age story to life by making you intimately engaged with her character..."
"The book is so well written that I was feeling all emotions. I loved remembering things from the 90s!
I really enjoyed the multiple point of views. It's nice being able to see what the other characters are thinking. The turn of events throughout the book left me laughing and crying at various points, feeling what Roshell was feeling. The love, fear, grief, and friendship found in Embracing You, Embracing Me led me on a rollercoaster of emotions. It was like I was right there in the middle of all that was happening."
Michelle: This was my first novel and it took me approximately six months to write the first draft. It’s a story of fiction, but there is a lot in the plot that came from actual experiences of my own. I did know a wonderful young man in my teen years, named Gabriel, who touched my life in much the same way. Many of the other characters are based on friendships that I still have to this day.
With this story, I really wanted to convey the concept that those we love, who pass on, never really leave us, but continue to impact our lives forever. Also, I included passages from the perspectives of Roshell’s friends so that the reader could experience how Roshell’s actions were impacting those around her. That is after all, Roshell’s life lesson; learning to live consciously and understand how her behaviors and how she treats people, affect others as well as her own future.
