Guest Blog and Contest with Karen Nutt!

The Power of a Scent?
Have you ever wondered why certain scents conjure up memories? Fragrances for good or bad can change your life forever, stirring up powerful feelings.
Pheromones are a natural chemical scents the body produces. In the animal kingdom, it controls all social behavior, including choosing a mate. Believe it or not, humans are influenced by these scents and are drawn to them, too.
A scent can also connect you to the place, person or event. The scent triggers the memory in a form of a conditioned response. This is why the smell of the ocean may remind you of your romantic evening with a special someone or why fresh baked cookies remind you of your grandmother. Scents can also trigger the subconscious and influence your mood. Perhaps the scent of freshly brewed coffee brings a smile to your face. I know a good cup of coffee in the morning sure makes me happy.
Each unique scent makes up the fabric of our lives and connects us to the special moments, holidays and events. Just like the shape shifters we like to read about with their keen sense of smell, scents are special to us, too.
In the past, I’ve given away pens, bookmarkers and other promotional items for my books. For my Fallen Angels series, I wanted try something unique. I worked closely with Jfay from Studio B, the creator of artistic candles and wicked perfumes. Her amazing talent to conjure up tantalizing scents didn’t fail her and she now offers a new Fallen Angel perfume, specially designed for my Fallen Angels series. How cool is that?
Close your eyes and imagine sweet earthy scent with honey sweetness and a dash of dark spice—dangerous and tantalizing as a brush of an angel’s wing.

A Question for the readers and/or authors: What scent has conjured up a special memory for you?
*Contest: All you need to do is leave a comment or ask me a question and you’ll be entered in the drawing to win a Fallen Angel perfume necklace. Please remember to leave your email address so I may contact you if you should win.
Take care,

  3. Wonderful post! And so very true about the power of scent. Early in my current 31 year marriage, my husband was in the armed forces and I had to starch and iron his uniforms. To this day, the scent of freshly starched and laundered cotton stirs memories of those exciting first years with my new husband. He's not so new now and those uniforms would never fit *ahem* but when he wears a freshly starched shirt and I catch that scent, I see that twenty-three year old soldier standing in front of me. ;-)

Why did you choose to write about Fallen Angels? I find the idea fascinating. I also would love to win the candle. I love wisteria and lilacs. That scent makes me turn around.

  9. Susan,

Why did I write about Fallen Angels? My husband and I were fortunate enough to see the fragments from the Dead Sea Scrolls when the aritfacts were at the San Diego Museum. The Book of Enoch inspired me to want to know more about the 200 angels sent down to earth to live among the humans.

The Fallen Angels were called the Grigori or Watchers. They are who inspired my Warriors For the Light Series. All my tales are a figment of my imagination and tend to lean toward a romantic view of the species.

The first section in the Book of Enoch depicts the interaction of the Fallen Angels with mankind. Semiazaz compels the other 199 Fallen Angels to take human wives to “beget us children”. The Warriors for the Light are these children. Half human and half angel.

  10. Donna,

I'm so glad the scent is a pleasant one. My son's room can sometimes smell like a boy's locker room. I so hope that isn't a scent the conjures up my son in later years. lol

  13. Scents really do play an important role in our lives. I know authors who choose a different scented candle each time they begin a new book. The book is then related to that scent.

Personally, there's nothing like the smell of fresh-cut lumber for me. It reminds me of endless trips to the home improvment stores as we renovate our home. It's been a labor of love, and we take pride in all we've accomplished so far.

  21. Love the necklace idea..really clever and useful. I can relate to several scents..vanilla scent reminds me of my mom who loved vanilla and had candles of it around her house..she passed away 46 years ago but I still relate vanilla to her and use it a lot to remind me of her. I also remember the four kids we had when I smell baby lotion..loved that smell too. susan L garysue@dejazzd.com

  25. I really like the necklace, what a unique idea. The book was fantastic. I couldn't stop turning the pages. My daughter read it after me and also couldn't put it down. Can't wait for Lucca's story.

  27. The smell of baking pizza takes me back to my parent's kitchen. We used to sit up at night and make our own as a family thing. We'd sit around the kitchen table and share in getting the ingredients ready and talk and share some great family time.

Good memories. Thanks for reminding me.

  30. Freshly-cut lumber reminds me of my Dad, a carpenter for 50 years. Certain perfumes remind me of my Mom, who now has Alzheimers and doesn't remember who I am anymore. But the smell that really gets me is sweet almond, the smell of the massage oil that my husband has always used to take away my stress. He's my HEA!

  31. Fiona,

Thanks for coming by and sharing your special scents. I'm glad you found your HEA guy. :)
