A bit of a personal gripe after witnessing 2 movies billed as something they're not.
SPOILER ALERT!!!
Easter weekend I saw The Last Song & Why Did I Get Married Too?
Now I know Nicholas Sparks loves his sentimental tear jerkers but at least The Notebook, Walk to Remember, and Dear John had their "Awww" moments. The Last Song left a bitter taste in my mouth. I went in thinking Miley Cyrus, cute little movie with some singing, romance, etc. But there was nothing redeeming to it at all. I'm not sure how the book reads but how many times can you play off the old Love Story theme? It's played out, same story with a twist on who will die in the end.
After that debacle I think to myself, ok...Why Did I Get Married was a little heavy but it had its funny moments and a joyful ending. Part 2 should be just about the same seeing as though Tyler Perry wrote them both. Damn was I wrong! Why Did I Get Married Too is just...DEPRESSING! Death, divorce, cheating, Janet Jackson going crazy with a golf club, did I mention unecessary death?
I go to the movies to ESCAPE reality not watch an edition of the evening news where they broadcast everything that's bad. Why Did I Get Married Too was SO bad I'll never watch the first one again...I can't, the characters are tainted now.
Whatever happened to the light hearted, romantic comedies that make you smile at the end or even a decent action film where good triumphs over evil. These days evil is running amuck, or the lead character is evil...I see enough assholes in the real world, my movies don't need to mirror that when I'm trying to get away from it all.
My true point here is that I guess there's a place for such dramatic films but they need to do a better job of billing them as such. The trailers are misleading at best. Same thing happened in Deniro's last film Everybody's Fine. They make it look like a nice Christmas comedy about family and when you go see it you're left feeling gray.
What is their point? The world has changed and no one wants to see the standard good v evil anymore? They want a sense of reality mixed in? Shades of gray not black and white?
Screw reality! I'm going to go watch a Disney film!!!!
