I try not to have a routine, afterall complacency sucks! I learned that from my time spent in the gym. Variety is the spice of life yet at the same time some things just HAVE to be done. I like to get the majority of "work" out of the way before I try to concentrate on my writing which consists of getting about 1/2-1 hr of writing in...which doesn't seem like alot but damn it all if life doesn't keep getting in the way!
As a writer half the battle is marketing...and its a battle! Seems like there's never enough time in the day to get it all done. There's always something new to attend to. I need a clone (or at least a good PR person!)
So my morning lately is consisting of mainlining caffeine with a waterback and staying chained to the net in search of glory...whoops, did that slip out? I meant promotion. No, I jest. I write for fun and to entertain...but honestly its no fun if the long hours aren't being rewarded with the satisfaction that SOMEONE is reading you...am I write, er right?

Yes I do which is mostly all day! I continuously write in my notebook then I type it all up after school. Not along process at all, just one that works for me.
ReplyDeleteWriting AND school..that's pretty tough to juggle. What genre do you write?
ReplyDeleteHum, a routine. I tend to do marketing in the am and writing in the pm. I have a list I create for what I am going to do for each that day and I usually do it. If I don't meet my goals, well then that means I add it to my Saturday night list. I also work full time in between and mother my 4 kids by doing homework, cooking and such. That's why I try to tackle small directed chuncks of my goals.
ReplyDeleteA routine..well since I work mostly from home, I do emails after I take the kids to school inthemornng, run off any errands in themorning after I suck down coffee and some toast then in the afternoon, I write for an hour until I have to get kids from school then I am running all over to dance classes, school functions, dinner and other fun mom stuff. When DH comes home from work, I sometimes sit and eat with him or drink my tea while we catch up from the day and either read a bit in the living room or watch a movie together. :)
ReplyDeleteI have a great PR manager (GO KATIE) who sets up m y chats.blogs and keeps me posted on where I h ave to go and when. She has been a godsend as I have had more time to write this year than the past years when I was doing 75% pr work to my 25% writing.

Promotion is the last thing a writer needs to worry about. Get the writing done first, and if it's good writing with a good story and good characters, others will promote you to death. If it doesn't get done, or isn't right when it is done, all the promotion in the world won't help.
ReplyDeleteAt most, PR should be ten percent of writing time.
Set hours. Keep them no matter what. Get the writing done first because nothing else matter in the least if the writing doesn't get done, and isn't right.
James, gotta agree and disagree with you. Absolutely the writing should be done and done first, and done WELL but they marketing and promotion of a completed novel is well over 10% if you ever want to break out the pack.
